VIOLIN TEACHING
FAQ

What is the ideal age to start learning the violin?

It all depends on the child's overall development. Generally by the age of 8 at the latest is advisable as the body gets less flexible as we grow! However this is the ideal, starting at any age is fine.

What is your cancellation policy?

I will try to rearrange if 48 hrs or more notice is given but if under 24 hrs the lesson fee will be charged unless there's a case of emergency. If you are wanting to stop lessons then 6 weeks notice is required.

How much should parents/ carers be involved?

At the beginning parents/carers will need to attend lessons, take notes and supervise daily practice. This is so the child can gain as much as possible form their violin lessons. At about the age of 9 this can be gradually phased out as independence, motivation and time management can be implemented.

Where can I find a suitable instrument?

There are many fine instrument shops in London, both high and lower end. I am happy to assist in the purchase of an instrument as it can be a sizeable investment. There are also many shops that have instrument hire schemes for smaller sizes.

Where will the lessons take place?

If you are taking private lessons then at my studio in central west London, W9. If at an institution, then at the institution that you attend. If online, then wherever you choose!

How much daily practice do you expect?

This of course depends on the child but learning an instrument on less than an hour a day of private practice can be tricky! I will give you exact instructions on how to manage your allocated practice time so that optimum results can be achieved.

Do you teach adults?

Yes, learning as an adult can be extremely rewarding for both teacher and student but adults must be aware that mature muscles are so much tighter! I can give you specific exercises (with and without the violin) to counteract and help you with this. I often also work with post graduate students who have come back for extra lessons to prepare for auditions and concerts.

FAQ ABOUT TEACHING ONLINE

How can you teach without physical contact?Although useful when used appropriately, physical contact is not totally necessary to teach the violin apart from teaching very young pupils in the very early stages.
How are lessons different online?Lessons are pretty much the same as in person. The only thing that doesn’t work is playing in unison or in parts due to the lag.
Do pupils focus less online?Every student is different but generally I haven’t found this a problem. In a sense, focusing on a screen seems to help focus and zooming in at times on the left/right hand can be very useful.
Doesn’t everything sound worse?Sound of course is affected although it’s only a potential problem if working in a very high level of detail at a very high level. Connection of course needs to be good.
How do I set up?As always, music stand to left so in this case of your device. Of course make sure both hands are well in the picture. I can tell what you’re doing with my eyes closed but seeing does help!
What if I get stuck in traffic getting to you?Hahaha! Never a problem!!!
